The Dance Beat: The Kentucky Running Set
This article is the first of a series of columns found in the magazine The Old-Time Herald, published from 1987 to 2023. As of May 1, 2026, the entire Old-Time Herald archive is available via The Southern Music Research Center and Whole South Heritage Works. Each issue included a "Dance Beat" column, edited by Phil Jamison, that covered a range of topics from old time square dancing, calling, and flat-footing to dance culture throughout the old time world.
Founded in 1987 by legendary musician Alice Gerrard, The Old-Time Herald served for more than 35 years as a leading voice of the old-time music community worldwide. Its 130-plus issues are now accessible through an archive sponsored by the Southern Music Research Center and contain a vast wealth of information that can’t be found elsewhere. Originally based in Galax, Virginia, the magazine was published for most of its run in Durham, North Carolina. Founding editor Alice Gerrard was succeeded in that position by Gail Gillespie, then by Sarah Bryan.
The Southern Music Research Center and Whole South Heritage Works are grateful to a community of donors, whose contributions made possible this significant digitization and archiving project — and to Alice Gerrard, who paved the way and made this whole thing possible.
